Which Sungrow hybrid inverter for a 5 kW PV + 10 kWh battery system?
The MG5RL or SH5.0RL single-phase hybrid is the right fit. Both support up to 16 kWh battery capacity expansion. The MG-series is the newer model with improved EMS and on-grid/off-grid switching speed.
Which batteries are compatible?
Sungrow hybrid inverters support 28+ third-party LFP battery brands, including: Dyness, PylonTech, Hithium, GSL, Easyway, Pytes, Felicity, BSLBATT, BYD Battery-Box, Soluna, ESS Pro, and Sungrow's own SBR battery module. Battery management is CAN bus-based with auto-detection.
What is the backup transfer time?
4 ms typical (10 ms maximum) for grid-to-backup transfer. This is fast enough for nearly all UPS-grade loads. The hybrid inverter operates in dual-mode: feeding excess PV to grid when on-grid, and switching to backup-load priority within 4 ms when grid drops.
Can I add a battery later if I install PV-only first?
Yes — that is exactly what the hybrid inverter is designed for. Install in PV-only mode initially. When you add a battery later (Dyness, PylonTech, etc.), connect via the battery DC port and the inverter auto-detects and configures. No re-commissioning needed.
Does the hybrid inverter support off-grid operation?
Yes — with battery installed, the MG-RL and SH-RL series support full off-grid operation (no utility grid). PV powers loads directly when sun is available; battery powers loads at night. Sungrow EMS handles seamless switching.
